SANCHI - BHARHUT - THE BAGH CAVES - DHAMNAR - SONARI - ANDHER - DEURKOTHAR - MURELKHURD

The stupas and monasteries of Sanchi were the hub of a thriving community of Buddhist monks from the 3rd century BC onwards. Spread over a 20 km radius, the other Buddhist settlements in the region were Andher and Murelkhurd (northeast of Sanchi) and Sonari and Satdhara (southeast and southwest of Sanchi, respectively).

Although the stupas at these four sites are not as grand as the monuments of Sanchi, they are evidence of the prosperity and growth of Buddhism under Ashoka and succeeding rulers.
